In 2022, Ding Liren will be a candidate

The Chinese GM Ding Liren started a marathon of rated games after Karjakin's 6-month ban left an open spot for the 2022 Candidates Tournament.

FIDE invites Ding Liren, but it is contingent on Sergey Karjakin's appeal to CAS, the highest court for sports disputes.

Karjakin will seek to rescind the ban.

To surpass Kaarjakin as the highest rated player, Ding Liren needed to play 30 games between 1 June 2021 and 30 April 2022.

Even though the chess community cheered for him all the way, the Chinese GM proved that anything is possible!

Hangzhou had a quadruple round-robin (12 games), Wei Yi had a 6-game match (6 games), and the Asian Games have a 10-round qualifier (10 games).

After completing 28 games with a score of 20.5 (13 victories, 15 draws, and not a loss), Ding Liren has also passed Alireza Firouzja in the rating list and is second again.

Liren's qualification will lead to:

Ranked second in 2021 World Chess Champion Match

Grand Swiss Alireza Firouzja

Finalist Fabiano Caruana

Duda won the World Cup

Hikaru Nakamura
