Former Defense Secretary Ashton Carter died at 68

Carter died Monday night in Boston of a "sudden heart attack." 

He served as Secretary of Defense from February 2015 to January 2017 under former President Barack Obama. 

As secretary, he launched a successful campaign to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria 

Opened all combat positions to women 

And forged new ties between the Defense Department and the nation's technology community

Despite his keen understanding of military technology, nuclear weapons, and international affairs, Secretary Carter loves nothing more than spending time with soldiers. 

Traveled [with his wife Stephanie] frequently to visit US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

Carter, a Rhodes Scholar who went to Yale University, joined the Department of Defense under former President Bill Clinton.
