LeBron James' unforgettable (and forbidden) workout with the Cavalier

James demonstrated his potential as a high school junior: 'Everyone left the gym thinking he was the chosen one.'

Lucas filled his offseasons when he was the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers

with individual workouts and pick-up games with high school, college and professional basketball players.

When Lucas opened the practice court on Gund Arena (now Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse) on May 22, 2002,

it wasn’t any different for the Cavaliers coach. That day, Lucas invited me to the gym as well.

The only media person there that day was me, a beat reporter covering the Cavaliers for The Plain Dealer.

The jaw-dropping display by LeBron James against several NBA players

however, did not occur to either of us, nor to anyone else in attendance, until it had reverberated throughout the world of basketball.

"The Chosen One," a year before the Cavaliers made him their No. 1 draft pick, and years before he'd become what many consider to be the world's best basketball player.
