His wife's advice. Jada Pinkett saw her husband "in hell" over the controversy that won't "die down," and she asked Will Smith to make amends to Chris Rock.

According to a source who spoke to Us Weekly on August 1, 2022, Jada, who has been Will's wife since 1997, was the one who persuaded Chris, 

who was hit on live television at the 94th Academy Awards in March 2022, to publicly apologise to him. Chris was the star of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

According to the insider, Jada has also been pressuring Will to apologise because it has turned into a very dark cloud over her Red Table Talk series. 

Will "never wanted" to apologise to Chris, but he was aware that the public had been waiting for "any mention of that moment."

According to the source, Will has been "in hell" since his altercation with Chris and is trying to "move forward" by not bringing up the slap. The insider said,  

"His team had hoped that the controversy would die down, but it just hasn't." Without dealing with the slap, he wouldn't be able to proceed successfully.

At the Oscars in March 2022, Will made headlines when he slapped Chris for making a joke about Jada's bald head, 

which he perceived as an insult given his wife's protracted battle with alopecia. Will publicly apologised to Chris for his actions that night on his YouTube,
